Alice Philips
I am a fabric artist and felt-maker who has been working and teaching in my Vancouver home studio for more than 20 years. My work has been shown in juried exhibitions in Hungary, Canada and the United States and is sold in galleries and shops throughout North America, as well as from my home studio.
I initially worked as an apprentice potter under Wayne Ngan, but found my own voice in the warm, tactile medium of fabric and felt-making. Using selected varieties of raw fleece, I card, dye, and create colourful fabrics that I then shape into highly original garments, accessories, and sculpture. Even in wearable art pieces, hangings and throws, my design always retain a 3-dimensional, textural sense that initially drew me to pottery. In my recent work, first introduced in a 3-artist exhibit at Numen Gallery in Yaletown, I returned to more strongly 3-dimensional forms as I explored the interplay of line, light and shape in a collection of felted lamps.
