Janet Strayer
My artwork is inspired by life around and within, its celebration and its sorrow, by memory and moment, by love of art, literature, and our impossible humanity. I work in different styles to express ideas and energies from whimsical to probing. My methods employ traditional drawing, etching and painting techniques as well contemporary mixed media and digital artwork.
I was born in Germany, grew up in New York City, am a Canadian citizen, and currently live in Vancouver and Saturna Island, BC. After graduating Columbia University, I was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, obtained a PhD, and became a university Professor Emerita in psychology. While teaching and contributing to research and publications throughout my academic career, I also trained to be an artist. The scientist-artist mix is quite compatible in my personal alchemy. My first solo show in Vancouver occurs this June at the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery.
