Maggie Scherf
My approach to painting is organic and playful. Working from an open-ended place of discovery, I develop patterns, forms and textures as they emerge on the canvas. I love watching the interplay of colours, and their vibrant quality. I see how they respond to each other and how I respond to them.
I am largely a self-taught artist, choosing to hone my painting skills through the process of experimentation and intuition. Photography was my primary means of artistic expression for a number of years. I turned to painting in 1995 to explore more abstract imagery and a more tactile medium. The innate beauty of nature on the West Coast continues to be my inspiration. Originally from Valleyfield, Quebec, I moved to Vancouver in 1973 to complete my BA and B.Ed at University of British Columbia. I now teach ESL..
