Marie H Becker-Pos
Art and psychology degrees prepared me to paint post-modern allegorical narratives of the animal kingdom. I apply paints, inks, exotic paper, fabric, threads and found objects to symbolize a range of human emotional experiences.
I grew up on Long Island, then a rural haven of salt marshes and farms bordering the Sound and Atlantic Ocean. Only a two-hour ride from New York City, artists from Winslow Homer to Jackson Pollack extolled the lyrical quality of landscape and water. This terrain shapes my mental landscape. My family property was sanctuary to Amazon parrots rescued from sunken ships, St. Bernard dogs, canaries, doves, geese, ducks, African game birds and rabbits, all sharing my space. My art acknowledges the valued place of these creatures in the natural world and I am defender of conservation and wildlife. I have donated work to the Sierra Legal Defense Fund, Pivot and Cancer research.
