Martin Peters
I make stoneware utilitarian pots and the “inside” of the pot is what really interests me. As a result of my training as a production potter, I make a series of the same or similar pots. The challenge is to develop the “life” within the work on a repetitive basis. It is meditation in action. The pots that inspire me are medieval jugs and English slipware from the early part of the last century. These common pots have an energy and a humbleness that is quiet but strong. This is what I aspire to in my work.
I have learned the craft of making pottery in England and Canada. My work has been shown in galleries and museums in Ontario and British Columbia. Shows include: Canadian and East Asian Ceramics, Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto); Beyond Argument - Artwork by Lawyers and Judges, Osgoode Hall (Toronto); and Martin Peters, John Reeve Group Show, Gallery of BC Ceramics (Vancouver).
