Michael Asti-Rose
The guiding principal of my artistic life is to make the useful beautiful. Creating public art benches in Kitsilano over the past two decades has given me a deepened sense of being part of my community. My hand-carved seats are usually carved in situ, so that people passing by can see the process and can even participate. My photos, of a visionary nature, often employ layering, and are tributes to women.
I sailed into Vancouver harbour on an ocean liner from India, in 1960, as an eleven-year-old immigrant. After careers in film-making (CBC-TV) and photojournalism (Maclean-Hunter), I now make Kitsilano my home. My awards include a Genie for my comedy Silent Movie. Another film, Mirror Mirror, a lyrical homage to Carl Jung, is in the Contemporary Collection of the National Art Gallery in Ottawa. I am best known in my neighbourhood for resting places created for The Naam, Banyen Books and the Pine Free Clinic. Photography, carving yellow cedar, and the world of herbs are my passions.
