Nyla Sunga
Visual art, music and dance are intertwined in my life, and each one can transport me out of the weary routine. I love the rhythm and play of the drawn line. I am moved to paint by the power of big skies, simple gestures, and faces that tell stories. Through my work I make sense of the impressions, the outrage, the heartbeat, the heat. I try to give thanks for the sublime movement of the sensual world that sustains me.
I have worked in book and magazine illustration, sign and mural painting, on commissioned portraits of people and homes. I was awarded a Canada Council of the Arts grant to write and illustrate a work of historical fiction set in the Gaspesian fishing village that is my ancestral home. Currently I am painting images from several years traveling, living and working in Africa.
