I create vessels from clay because I love the search for a beautiful shape - just the right curve, the overall balance and how the vessel sits on a flat plane. I am also inspired by the shapes, textures and colours of the natural world. I attempt to capture some of that inspiration in my smoke-fired vessels. The addition of a fossil to some pieces compliments the timelessness of the materials and the transformation process.

My vessels are not glazed, but instead are layered with a terra sigillata slip and hand-burnished. The process creates a natural satin “skin” on the vessel. Using a primitive outdoor kiln, vessels are left to the serendipity of various combustibles, flames and smoke. Trapped carbon and fumes mark the vessels with unique patterns and create subtle blushes of colour. While I have learned how to encourage certain effects, no vessel’s distinctive marks can be reproduced.
