What is Art? Why is it important to culture, why do we love or hate it, support and collect it and how do we cope with the trends and fashions that attempt to dictate our tastes and appreciation of the visual arts? These questions will be asked and discussed during three evenings of talking about art in a way that everyone can participate and understand the issues.

Art: Wild and natural vs professionally trained and domesticated

What is the difference between art that is produced by spontaneous means and art that results through the intellectual study of the craft? In 1945, the French painter Jean Dubuffet coined the term Art Brut: “works executed by persons unharmed by artistic culture who draw their inspiration from their own resources and not from the clichés of classical or fashionable art.” On the other hand, academies of art have much to offer: they champion centuries of cultural inheritance. What is the creative tension between these two poles?

Moderator Pnina Granirer is a Vancouver artist whose works have been exhibited internationally. Her works are found in numerous public and private collections in Canada, the US, Europe, Australia, Israel and Peru. She is the co-founder of Artists in Our Midst Open Studios and has been featured in books and film.

For the love of Art: The pleasures of collecting and its lasting rewards Why do we collect art? Some do it for fulfillment of a deep need for emotional and esthetic rewards, others do it for decoration, for investment or for status. What is it like to live with the vision of an artist in your daily life? How much are we prepared to get involved with images and how does art enrich us? Why do people pay astronomical amounts of money for some art and not for others?

Moderator Paul Crawford, former director/curator of the Grand Forks Art Gallery, now at the Gallery of the South Okanagan. In addition, he has a long history as writer, art consultant and gallery owner. His love of art led him to amass a collection of over 1500 works by Canadian artists, some of which he will bring along. One day he hopes to found a museum to house his growing collection.

Painting is dead. Long live painting!

Somehow, painting survived the invention of printing and photographic technology. In order to keep going, however, painting will behave as a transvestite, jester, butterfly or chameleon; it will even mimic love and death, just in order to get somebody’s attention. In spite of its strange intent, painting still attains magic. It is still able to steer the soul, trigger a smile, or pull a frown. Will painting resist and survive the fatal attraction of the digital age?

Moderator Vjeko Sager is a Vancouver-based visual artist and art educator, whose creative opus extends from drawing to multimedia. His works are exhibited internationally and represented in many public collections. Vjeko currently teaches at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design as a sessional instructor.
