ABOUT michael
My creative journey spans five decades in a wide range of media, including oil painting, sculpture, video, and sound. My first medium was oil painting, as taught by by mentor Peter Devine in the late 1970s. After exploring many other media for many years, I have, in the last decade, returned to oil painting as my medium of choice.
In painting, I am influenced mostly by the so called Ashcan school of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with artists like Milton Avery and Edward Hopper, but there are painters of many schools and from many eras whose work I love. I like to paint cityscapes, landscapes, people in various environments, the figure, and still life.
I have a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, 1984, and a masters in education from Simon Fraser University, 2005. I have shown in Halifax, Calgary, and Vancouver
